Rwanda’s Solidarity with the Unfortunate

Mozambique received 22 tons of humanitarian assistance from the Republic of Rwanda, consisting of food supplies and essential medicines. The aid is intended to alleviate the suffering of thousands of people affected by recent floods and heavy rains across the country.

The support is expected to assist more than 93,000 households currently living in temporary accommodation centers, particularly in the provinces of Maputo and Gaza, as well as other vulnerable communities impacted by extreme weather conditions.

The symbolic handover ceremony was witnessed by Maria de Fátima Manso, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and the Mozambican Community Abroad. She noted that this shipment represents the first batch of assistance from Rwanda, with additional support scheduled to arrive on Thursday to further help address the ongoing humanitarian crisis that has persisted since December.

Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Mozambique, Donat Ndamage, explained that the donation, comprising essential goods such as rice, flour, sugar, cooking oil, and beans, aims to ease the hardship faced by families who have lost their homes and belongings due to the floods. He emphasized the strong ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, reaffirming Rwanda’s commitment to continued support whenever necessary.

Distribution of the aid will take place in temporary shelters hosting victims of extreme climate events, under the coordination of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD) and a government monitoring team.

César Tembe, Director of Prevention and Mitigation at INGD, stated that the assistance will help bridge the resource gap the government faces in responding to the current rainy season and in providing humanitarian support to thousands of affected families.
